US marine killed in Kuwait shootout

Two civilian gunmen entered a war game being held in Kuwait between US and Kuwaiti troops.  They attacked two US marines and killed one of them.  They then went off to the troop’s command center and tried attacking more troops, but were shot and killed.

The Kuwaiti military is looking into this to see if they were terrorists or had strayed into the war game, came under fire and then fired back.

Personally, I find it very hard to believe you can accidentally wander into a war game.  When I lived on the Big Island of Hawaii, the military ran war games in the center of the island every now and then.  There is a road that goes through there called Saddleback Road, and the car rental companies will not insure your car if you drive on it.  The military has a base there, and routinely has war games.  I’ve even seen them drop bombs by plane there, when I was on top of Mauna Loa at the NOAA research station.

One time, some friends of mine and I were driving on the road heading back to Kona.  We could see a whole lot of military vehicles on the road and in the fields next to it.  There was dust all in the air, and you could hear the vehicles and firing over the radio in the car.  We decided to keep going and ended up in the middle of this huge convoy.  I’m sure it looked funny.  4 college kids in a red Mercury in the middle of all these camo Humvees, trucks and tanks.  I’m pretty sure the drivers in front and behind us were laughing at us.

Anyway, my point is that it’s hard to stumble into a war game.  They’re not quiet, secretive things.  I think these guys were terrorists and were trying to get a bunch of virgins in heaven.
