Unfortunately, I missed this game, but from what I’ve read, it was one of the best games in this World Cup yet. The US ended up tying the Italians with a 1-1 draw, earning them a point and keeping their hopes of advancing alive.
The Italians scored first, but the US returned the favor only a few minutes later. Then the game got ugly.
An Italian was booted from the game for a horrible elbow to McBride which made him bleed pretty bad. He needed some patching up before it would stop bleeding. A while later, two Americans were booted from the game leaving the US with only 9 men on the field! Amazingly, the US stayed alive with some great goalkeeping and aggressive offense.
Later in the game, it looked like the US had scored the winning goal, but it was taken back by an offsides call. That would’ve been amazing had it stood. The US would’ve had 3 points then and a much better chance to advance to the next round.
What really helped the US’ chances of advancing was the amazing Ghana team! They blanked the Czechs 2-0 with a constant barrage of shots that seemed to put the Czechs on the defensive the whole time. Ghana earned 3 points with the win.
With the US’ tie and Ghana’s win, all four teams in this group have a chance of advancing to the next round. This is shaping up to be the most interesting group so far. I thought it was going to be all Italy and the Czechs, but it’s turning out to be very exciting.
Sometimes I wonder about the refs. Like they have an agenda or something. And not just against the US. I’ve seen some seriously bad calls in soccer matches before, like in the final of the World Cup in France where the French beat Brazil 3-0. There were some really bad calls in that match in favor of France.
Do you know when and where there will be a replay? I saw the highlights on ESPN.
No, I didn’t get to see the replay. I had too much going on over the weekend. At least I got to see the highlights. I will make it a point to watch the US v. Ghana game though.
I had heard about the ref being suspended before. Yeah, real shocker. How can someone who is suspended on the international stage like that, be let back in? That doesn’t make any sense.
You HAVE to catch the replay. My throat STILL hurts from screaming at the TV. The US team started out really well, totally dominating the first 20 minutes and really setting the whole mood/pace of the match.
The refs were terrible. There should have only been one red card of the match… when the Italian player intentionally elbowed McBride’s face. The other two red cards were totallly uncalled for. We should have won that match.
