Web Host Problems

I’m sure some people have noticed how horribly slow my site was at times, especially within the last several weeks.  Some people emailed me and told me about it, and I saw it for myself at a friend’s house a couple weeks back.  It would take at least several seconds just to make the connection, and another 10-20 seconds to load the page!  Horrible!

At first, I thought it was my code.  I checked it, but it looked fine.  Then I thought it was ExpressionEngine, the system I use to run my site.  I asked for help in their support forums and hardly anyone else was having the same problems I was.  Rick and Co. had tested their software extensively and hadn’t had the problems I was describing.  So then I thought maybe it was the MySQL on my server.  I did need to optimize my tables, but that didn’t help either.

Last night, the site got so bad, it actually timed out on me!  It wouldnt even load!  So I emailed my host and asked them what the deal was.  It turns out that I must’ve been on a small server that wasn’t geared for a dynamic site.  My site would overload the server and freak it out, thus slowing things down.  This didn’t start until I moved to EE.  My host moved my account to a beefier server and told me I could either upgrade to their enterprise level plan or my account would be terminated within 7 days!  Lovely!  I don’t have the money to deal with this right now.

So I’m shopping around for a new host, and I think I might have found it.  pMachine Hosting can give me all the power and space I need for not much more than I’m paying now.  And their servers are set up for sites running either pMachine or EE, so I should have no problems or slowdowns.

So… it looks like I will be switching to them soon.  I haven’t made my final decision yet, but they’re looking good.

I’ll give a warning once the switch-over begins.

hey Chris. I don’t want to run down pmachinehosting, I love the pm guys.. but if price is a matter you might want to check the host I use – TotalChoice Hosting. These are their plans.

Theres no affiliate program so this doesn’t help me at all – I use them though and they’re fantastic. I run EE so I can promise theres no problem with it on their servers. Even their $4/month plan gets you more ‘bang for your buck’ than the pmhosting plan for $10/month….

What I find odd is that Nevin, who is in charge of pMachine Hosting, has told me that MySQL loads with EE are quite a bit less than pMachine Pro. PHP processing is in the area of 10-15% more though, so perhaps that is enough to tip the scales for your old host’s server.

Actually I notice that Lisa that commented on this thread is also now hosted with pMachineHosting! So much for TotalChoiceHosting as a good choice I guess wink
