What American Accent Do You Have?

Apparently I have a Midland American accent.

What American accent do you have? (Best version so far)

Midland

(“Midland” is not necessarily the same thing as “Midwest”) The default, lowest-common-denominator American accent that newscasters try to imitate.  Since it’s a neutral accent, just because you have a Midland accent doesn’t mean you’re from the Midland.

Hi Chris, I wondered what kind of accent it would give me, considering I’m as English as they come! – Result: I have a North Eastern American accent! – Which is probably quite accurate as people from Massachusetts, New England etc. have accents closest to the English.

According to the test I have a Midland accent as well. However most “Americans” I meet never know what part of America my accent comes from and conclude that I must be Canadian. Until of course I tell them I grew up in Germany… then all of the sudden they can all hear the German accent. wink

If I remember right, you don’t really have that bad of a German accent, if any at all, Andy. Your accent does sound a bit like a Canadians or north-central American.

Paul, I’m not surprised at all that your accent is closest to New England. Although some accents up there, like Massachusetts, are quite different from the Queen’s English.

Chris, looks like you and I are both fish out of water, or something. Your test result — midland — covers the place where I’m from, while I tested into the Northern area. When I was growing up in Pittsburgh, people would often think I was from somewhere else; I refused to pick up that accent.
