I saw this chart on the French Yahoo, and thought it was interesting to see who the world’s largest airlines are by number of passengers.
“Look, you have to understand that i am a true Canadian, and i know what shold be right.”
That doesn’t even make sense.
“Who do you think conducted the Survay? 3 letters U,S,A. think about it AA, United, Delta, and North West. Have any Guesses?”
Since when was French used in US surveys? And when did WaG-Reuters become a US-based company?
There is no manipulation by the US here. You need to take off your tinfoil hat. It’s quite simple. US-based airlines fly more people who fly a lot of miles than other airlines.
Look, i’m knew here, but i’ve been making notes and well Sin, your just a guy that likes to be right. You should try letting other people have the spot light. Sorry But Alitalia Rules. I’ve been on a Quantis Flight and it was OK. the worst flight i’ve ever been on was and American Airlines flight the service was crap. i will never step on an American Airlines Plane Again!
If you’re “knew” (it’s spelled new) here, then why is your IP address the same as Andrew’s above?
It’s not a matter of letting people be in the spotlight, as you mentioned. It’s a matter of reading the freaking graph for what it says and not making up some stupid, lame conspiracy theories about who was behind it or hyperventilating over which airline is the best.
very interesting how you can fight over which airline is better. The chart is outdated. It’s from 2002, now it’s 2007. Also i think that South African Airways might be there because they are getting quite large.
My personal opinon on which airline is the best is South African. There first and buisness class both have fold out seat beds and economy is typical. Their service is great and they have really good food. Also they are still pretty cheap since they’re one of the newer airlines.
Only people who can’t read the graph are trying to argue which airline is better.
The chart is from 2003, the data is from 2002. 2007 isn’t even close to being over yet, so the newest data you can compare it to is 2006. I can’t find a newer chart.
If anyone else knows where newer data can be found, link to it please. It would be interesting to see.

I think its high time that the chart was translated correctly, as few above seem to have understood. (Félicitations à ceux entre vous qui l’a bien compris!) It is not a count of the worlds largest airlines, as the person who posted it suggests. It is a count of passengers transported in the year 2002 multilpied by how far they are travelling. Of course a contry like the US with a huge population travelling over a huge landmass will thus, rank highly up. In effect, the chart shows nothing when it comes to quality, standards or even the size of an airlines fleet. Think about it, when the americans wish to travel internationally, they are going to have to travel further than most other nations. Should a Brit wish to hope over to another to Paris, its nowhere near the distance as passenger who travels from NYC. So, smaller distance, equals a smaller plane. (You’d never see a 747 crossing the Channel!) But that doesn’t mean that LESS people wish to make the journey, so there needs to be a higher frequency of flights doing the small voyage. Hence, a greater fleet of smaller craft are needed. The chart in essence is useless when it comes to means of determing airlines size globally. Some personal comments, Lufthansa are rather good
But I guess the patriotism in me will always head to the BA website ![]()
What it does show, finally is that the Americans are broadening their horizons and getting to know the world a bit – but as a Londoner living in Paris, if the Yanks are going to insist on pronouncing “Les Shomps-Elysées” .... guys, un tuyau (tip) ... its said Champ-ce-Ely-zay….not “Champs-Elie-zayse”.
I feel for you, Sin. I guess I should consider myself lucky to not have flown with Air Canada.
Lisa, the chart isn’t about which airline (or its associated country) is the best. The chart is simply showing which airlines move the most people that fly a lot of miles. It’s as simple as that.
