X-Men 3: The Last Stand

It’s been nearly three years since I had seen a movie in the theater. The last movie I saw in the theater was The Matrix Revolutions, if that tells you anything. Now that I live in Austin with two theaters literally five minutes away, I’ll be able to see movies a lot more now.

Yesterday evening, I met my cousin and her husband to see X-Men 3: The Last Stand. I had already seen the first two, and the previews for this one looked pretty good.

The mutants actually get to use their powers in this one, which is nice. The first two movies were good, and the third movie thankfully doesn’t ruin it all. We’re introduced to several new mutants like Juggernaut, Kitty Pryde, Colossus and others. The fight scenes were good and the story was interesting, but both could’ve been better.

I would’ve liked to have seen more of Colossus. He was a favorite of mine when I was a kid, along with Wolverine. He only had a small role in this one, and he didn’t look very convincing. Plus, it would’ve been fun to see a showdown between Juggernaut and Colossus.

One good thing about the movie is you’re never really able to predict what’s going to happen next. And if you haven’t seen the movie yet, make sure to stay until the end of the credits. I’m not going to say anything more about it, just trust me. Most everyone left the theater when the movie was over, but our group and about six others stuck around until the end.

If you liked the first two X-Men movies, then you should definitely check out X-Men 3: The Last Stand.

Man that sucks, I just watched X-Men 3 on Saturday evening and of course walked out before the end of the credits. Oh well – will just have to wait until the DVD comes out.

We saw it on Sunday afternoon. I liked it quite a bit. The internet chatter among comic book geeks was that Brett Ratner would ruin the franchise. Well, if you asked me, me made a great series capper. Yes, some mutants didn’t get to show off their powers or come center stage, but we need to remember, this is a movie, not a tv or comic book series which has months, sometimes years, to showcase different characters. Personally, I liked getting only glimpses of certain mutants ( Colossus, Angel ) because, in the immortal words of Elvis: Always leave ‘em wanting more.”

The Danger Room sequence at the beginning of the film was excellent. It had a nice, mean, “Terminator” vibe to it and really brought back memories of the classic comic story “Days of Future Past.”

Patrick Stewart and Sir Ian once again show how cool they can be, delivering their lines with those great accents. Those guys could read Chinese menus and sound awesome. “Shimp Lo-Mein and Egg Drop soup, did you say?” Go on…say it like Ian McKellen…go on!

Um…where was I? Oh yeah, X-3…Kitty Pryde and Colossus were in X-2 ( Kitty “fell” through the bed when the S.W.A.T. team came into the mansion and Colossus armored up in one quick scene. ) Kitty was also in X-1, phasing through a door in one scene when Xaver talks to Wolverine. That character has been played by 3 actresses!

Rumor has it that Hugh Jackman is looking to play Wolverine in a solo adventure. They have lots of great stories to choose from there. The man has been all over the globe in the comics, fighting everything from Government agents to ninjas and the Yakuza.

If this film is really a huge hit beyond its Memorial Day Weekend opening, I’d like to see them tackle other super heroes…you know…those from that Top Ten List of Least Impressive Super Hero Abilities? Ability to calm jittery squirrels. Magnetic Colon. Really Bendy Thumb? The mind reels.
