In my earlier post about all the different Linux distros I have, I never mentioned which of those was the best one I’ve worked with. Well, the answer is simple. Yellow Dog.
It is hands down the most straightforward, easy-to-install and use, stable Linux distro for the Mac. It could even be argued (and has been) that Yellow Dog is one of the best Linux distros regardless of platform.
NetBSD, ROCK and Gentoo are not for the Linux initiate, which I certainly am. Mandrake and Yellow Dog sport nice installer applications which allow you to either install a basic system or a detailed, package-by-package installation. A Mandrake install leaves you with a more organized KDE and Gnome start menu than Yellow Dog, which is nice. However, Mandrake is buggy as hell. And it’s not just on the PPC. My friend has it on his PC laptop and it is just as unstable and buggy for him.
Yellow Dog simply works though. It’s stable and much more snappy than OS X on my Pismo PowerBook. All my laptop’s features are supported. Close the lid, it sleeps. The CD eject, volume and brightness keys work. The trackpad works. My network connection through DHCP works. And that’s what sets Yellow Dog apart from the other distros for PPC. Easy to install and it works.
So if you’re looking for a cheap, stable, robust alternative for your Mac than OS X, check out Yellow Dog.
So, are you a Yellow Dog Republican???
